Just How Big A Boy Are You?

Post by Eve » December 17th, 2019, 6:22 am

Soldier Dreyric Briouse,

You are summoned to attend an evaluation session for your skill in the sword. Present yourself in the Warder Training Yards one hour after High, Sixth Day. Bring no weapons, as all shall be provided for you. You are required to wear your Soldier’s uniform. Your instructor will be Caddoc Svan Asha’man, of the Yellow Ajah.

Yours in the Light,
Caddoc Svan Asha’man
Yellow Ajah

The letter had been delivered to Dreyric in his first class of the day on Fourth Day, which would give him plenty of time. There was little else to tell him about the letter, as the messenger was a small boy and clearly did not know what the contents were. The wax seal was yellow with a small bundle of herbs sigil pressed into it to seal it shut from prying eyes. The Asha’man mentioned, Caddoc Svan, was newly risen, but not unknown. Most that spent time in the Warder Yards knew of him, and his serious demeaner. However, for a Soldier who did not as regularly fight or spar, they might not yet even know that. Still, if he asked around he might hear other stories, stories about Caddoc Svan and a number of pretty ladies..and pretty lads…

Dreyric was surprised when the messenger came into his morning class carrying a letter. He assumed that it was for someone else, as there was no reason that he knew of that he would be getting a letter, so when the boy asked if there was someone there that was named his name, he had been mystified and eager to see whom had sent this letter and why. The first chance he got when he got a break from class, he opened up the letter, though first he marveled at the yellow seal and the little bunch of herbs that had been used to seal it up. He had stared at the letter, scarcely able to believe his luck. He was going to get to be evaluated for skill in the sword? He'd heard this Asha'man's name before as he'd been spending a fair amount of time watching training sessions, but he didn't really know much about him.

Being the inquisitive young man he was, he spent some time the next day asking after this particular Asha'man, and when he did hear anything about him, the information made him raise his eyebrows. Apparently this individual had a bit of a reputation.. He'd also heard his attitude however was as such that he probably wouldn't be giving him any tips even if he asked. That was a pity, but Dreyric was still excited to have gotten an invitation such as this at all.

The day after, Dreyric hurried to the Warder Training Yards, dressed in the black of his uniform. There was a few wrinkles in his shirt and his hair looked a little like it had been blown by the wind. It was currently five minutes after one hour after High, and it was clear the young man was in a hurry to get where he was going. He took a quick breath after he got there and he looked around slowly, those forest green eyes of his shining with eagerness.

Caddoc watched the time quietly as it grew closer to the moment he was to meet the young soldier for his evaluation. With each moment that passed, he was more and more certain the boy would be late. At two minutes till, he placed the practice swords back on the rack and pushed it back to it’s storage against the wall. The sound of the bell that announced one hour after High came and went, and he shook his head. He looked around the practice yard, and then quietly exited without a word.

He passed a rushing soldier a minute later, clearly on the way to the ring he had just exited. He made no attempt to stop the boy or identify himself. The child was late. The only thing that labeled him as Dreyric’s intended instructor was the icy composer of his face and the yellow sash that lay over his arm. He had changed from his blue coat and yellow ascot when he had reached the yard, wearing instead his Asha’man coat with the sword and dragon. That flicker of yellow was a surprising bit of color here. If the boy identified him, he cared not. His beginning time had come and gone, and Dreyric had missed it.

Dreyric had already been punished once due to his tendency not to be exactly punctual and he had gotten a lot better with it, or so he thought, but it was still a glaring fact that he was a bit tardy for this appointment. He had been certain there would be enough time to finish up something else that he'd put off before this, but it had ran over just a little more than he'd expected. He began to wonder if that would be a problem and after thinking about what he'd heard about the one he'd gotten that letter from, he had started to suspect that it just might be.

As he hurried to where he was supposed to be, he passed someone and he turned his head, his eyes shifting over the individual that was moving through. This man's face looked like it could be made of stone for all the expression it had, and he had a yellow ash over his arm. Now just wait, wasn't that individual that sent his letter of the yellow Ajah? He called out, not knowing if he would stop or not, "Wait a moment, are you Asha'man Svan? " He waited for just a brief second and said in a rush, "I'm Soldier Briouse, and I apologize for my tardiness."

Caddoc heard the young man calling out behind him, and he almost just kept walking. However, that would likely just make the young man chase after him, and waist even more of his time than had already been wasted. He sighed inwardly and paused before turning to face the young man. His face was calm and almost emotionless, his eyes however danced and leapt as if all the emotion he didn’t show on his face cackled just beneath the surface. He watched the young man, jacket and ascot looped over his arm.

When he finally, finally spoke, his voice was as calm and even as his face was. “You should be apologizing to yourself.” He stated, watching the young one. “You may have wasted my time, but you robbed yourself of an opportunity to better yourself. I do not deal with tardiness. Have a good day.” With that, he started to turn away, looking as if he planned on heading towards the infirmary.

Dreyric had a feeling that he had just really made a mistake here, even though he had thought he'd been doing better. He was very sure that the other was going to keep walking. However, he actually did pause, and the young man found himself wondering if it would have been better if he wouldn't have done so at all. He peered at him, noticing he didn't look agitated or even annoyed, though his eyes seemed to say something else, or at least, that was what he guessed. Those eyes were on him then and he felt a touch uneasy for a moment. Then the other finally spoke after he began to wonder if he was going to do so or not.

He listened to what he said and thought fast when the other began to turn away. "Nor should you have to deal with tardiness, Asha'man Svan, and you have my word that I will never be tardy again! All I ask is for one chance to prove that, and if I prove to be dishonest, than I will never bother you again." He said with a bit of a flourish, seeming to mean what he said, and he continued to watch him, his eyes widened just slightly.

Caddoc’s eyes stayed upon Dreyric, hardly blinking as he watched him. Those green orbs danced and pranced about, and the other might see him cock his head ever so slightly to the side. He gave off an air of curiosity for just a moment, one brow twitching. “You seem to be under the belief that you are in any sort of control here, Soldier.” He said finally, his voice serious. “I assure you, you are not. You have no power with which to barter, and whether or not you ‘bother me again’ is not up to you in any form or fashion.”

He fell silent again, seeming to be thinking, his eyes moving towards the training yard that they had left behind. “The bandages in the Infirmary do need a good cleaning…” he said finally, seeming to make up his mind. “I will evaluate you now.” He stated, “And then you will spend the rest of this evening until lights out cleaning, boiling, and refolding all of the bandages. If you prove impressive in both tasks…I will consider teaching you further. Of course, any further tardiness will not be suffered. Not even by a minute. Do you understand?”

This tactic probably wasn't going to work at all. It might just make him even less likely to agree to this, but Dreyric had to do something. He couldn't just let this chance slip by without some sort of action. He watched closely now as his eyes seemed to be doing most of the reacting to his comments. He waited anxiously, wondering for a moment if he'd invoked some kind of curiosity in the other with his response. He then answered him, and the answer didn't give him much hope at all. He was right though, he had no power really in this situation, but did he need any to bother the other? He thought of pointing that out, but then thought better of it, though the contradiction would be sighted for a moment shifting over his features.

Then he was quiet again, and then he spoke of the bandages that were in need of a cleansing in the infirmary. He wasn't sure he liked where this was going, but then he stated that he would evulate him and he felt a sense of elation at this. This news was considerably dampened by what he said next, and he was tempted to make a face. He did look a little crestfallen as he couldn't stop himself from doing so, but he nodded slowly at his words, his gaze shifting away from that sharp green gaze now. "Yes, Asha'man Svan, I understand completely." He answered, reaching up to push a section of his hair out of his eyes.

Caddoc Svan nodded his head and lifted a hand, indicating the deserted training area they had supposed to be meeting in. “Then proceed.” He instructed. When the other entered the area, the Asha’man moved across it to the stand holding the practice weapons. He pulled two wooden ‘swords’ from the rack and tossed one to Dreyric, watching closely to see how the other caught it. The ‘sword’ was a narrow bundle of reeds, bound tightly. Light of weight and quick of speed, they could be wielded at full speed and strength, but would not cut. They would, however, leave quite the welp upon any area that they hit.

He moved into the middle of the ring and held his sword at his side, his right hand (he was left handed) over the ‘hilt’ to imitate the motion before one unsheathed the sword, or ‘unfolded the fan’. “Do you have any armor that you prefer?” He asked him, cocking his head to the side. “By this I mean armor you already have experience with from previous battle, not something you wish to learn in the future.” He assumed that Dreyric did have experience from previous battle, otherwise he would be seeking tutorship, not an evaluation.

Dreyric lifted his head and began walking, going into the training area he'd been first instructed to meet the other in. He walked over to the stand, meeting Caddoc there. He caught the practice weapon that was thrown to him without a pause. He caught it by one of its ends and got a tight grip on it so he wouldn't drop it. He looked at the item that he had caught and nodded slightly, following the other into the middle of the ring. He summoned his concentration now because he didn't want to fail this evalution. He believed he had the potential not to, but he didn't want to get nervous.

Then he was asked a question and he nodded now. "I've always worn a shirt of chain mail when I've skirmished before." He replied. He even had brought that shirt of chain mail with him as he'd had it for several years now, but he hadn't brought it to this meeting, though perhaps he should have. He glanced at the other and then nodded. Then if he got the idea from that glance that he could start, he then loosened his body and looked alert, and he walked a bit on the balls of his feet as he adapted the stance of 'the cat crossing the courtyard'. His eyes shifted back and forth as he took a few steps towards Caddoc, his left hand hanging freely down, and the other was near the handle of his sword so he could draw as soon as he needed to.
