The edge of a vigil (Open)

Beron
Beron swung through his attack, his arms working hard to shift the axe as he practiced a feint before alerting his angle to come from the side. It was hard work, he chosen a larger axe than the horseman’s axe he was becoming more accustomed too; still he knew that was likely the best way to build his stamina.

Today his wooden target was meant to be an infantryman, slower but with good armour that would help to protect the man as he advanced. Beron had quickly found that the axe was capable of strong blows, he could feel the power of the head as it’s edge struck against the shield. As well, as he worked on the weapon, he counted his strikes, using his stamina to press blow after blow onto the shield the dummy. A strong opponent would move and dance he knew, but for now Beron knew that with the axe he could put a shielded opponent on his heels. And that would come in handy as Isla and Beron looked towards fighting the Whitecloaks.

With a grunt of effort, his next swing did not remove the weapon from the target’s shield, and he realized the spike on the back had sunk into the shield. Knowing from Bastian’s lessons, Beron knew that would leave him vulnerable to a counter; so he danced away from the target with quick footwork. Seeing the hole the axe had punched into the shield, Beron winced in regret. He knew the Armoury was used to repairing the damage caused by the Gaidin and their trainees, still he regretted the deep puncture. He fought with the axe and got it free, trying a coupe of grips before cursing. Realizing he had forgotten another pointer Bastian had given him, Beron moved his grip up the haft and was able to yank the spike out then.

Once more he mimed through a series of attacks, finally twisting sideways against an imagined sword slash, and striking with the haft of the axe to the target’s ribs. Satisfied for the moment, Beron moved through some exercises to help ease the tightness in his wrist and shoulders, his mind wandering as he caught sight of his sword and daggers drapped over the weapon’s rack.

There were many who fought only with the sword at the Grey Tower. In fact, he had been fortunate enough to see some of Haedan’s skill, and he knew that Heron marked blades protected the Grey Tower as well. There was a part of him that wondered if his work with the axe, took away from the time he could be spending with the sword. Some part of him knew that learning the axe would enable him to respond to the foe with unexpected strengths, and ultimately that would allow him to protect and aid Isla in her goals. With a deep breath, he stood out of the exercises and looked down upon the sands of the training circle.

Knowing he was feeling nerves with everything having changed so fast, he laughed when he realized that there were two people who had on occasion offered him advice in the role he now found himself. Shaking his head as he imagined the rumours that would fly through the halls in the learning ranks heard of him marching through the halls with an axe in hand, Beron resolved to return the weapon to the Armoury, then see if he could find either Ravak or Riahana Gaidin.
