A Tour of the Tower attn: Vaska

Accepted Amaranie Tice
"Amaranie, would you do me a favor?"

Amaranie set down the cup she'd been working with, then stood from the desk she'd been using and turned around to face the source of the voice. "Of course, Lorian Sedai," she said, perfectly aware that despite the politely phrased question, that was the only acceptable response.

"What do you need?"

The Indigo's head was bent over what appeared to be a small metal ball, lit up with strands of Fire, and she didn't take her eyes off it when she answered. "I need you to go to the Mistress of Novices's office and show one of the new girls around," she explained. "I meant to go myself, but I just don't have time right now."

Amaranie nodded silently, curtsied, then headed quickly for the door of the Vaults, leaving the cup on the desk so she could return to it later. She hurried through the halls, her long legs quickly carrying her towards her destination. It was a relief when she finally arrived to see that nobody was waiting yet, neither the unknown novice nor Miahala Sedai. Taking a seat in one of the chairs outside the office door, Amaranie tossed her brown ponytail over her shoulder and looked down at the skirt of her dress. She did her best to keep it clean, but ever since she'd somehow ended up with a cat, the white fabric always seemed to be covered in little red hairs. She picked them off one at a time as she waited, only occasionally lifting her head to dart a glance towards the closed office door.

Vaska Hryjorii Reyar
Vaska strode down the corridor of the Grey Tower, dangerously riding the line between acting in obvious haste and simply being efficient with her time. The bells in her long braid jingled with her steps, announcing her presence to the other novices she passed even more than the sound of her footfall. While not running late, she was hopeful to make her way to the Mistress of Novices’ study early, in the unlikely case that she would become lost, or delayed by an event outside of her control. She was aware that someone had been tasked with showing her around the Tower at this time today, and she had know knowledge of who that individual was. Unlikely as it may be, being late for an Aes’Sedai or even Accepted would be absolutely unthinkable. And terrible.

In truth the way from the novice’s quarters to Miahala’Sedai’s study was one of the only paths she had been able to commit to memory so far. Not from any infraction, yet, thank the Light. It had been perhaps two full days since her official entry into the novice book, and while it was easy to adopt the demanded routine with the ease of a disciplined soldier, she had yet to memorize more than the most immediate Tower layouts.

As Vaska approached the Mistress of Novices’ study she spotted the unnamed Accepted seated outside, head bent down. Vaska cleared her throat and curtsied, a relatively awkward and jerky motion as she grabbed her white skirts to spread them.

“I am novice Vaska Reynar, Accepted. I am to assume that you are who will be showing me around the tower?”

Amaranie
Amaranie was still trying to make herself presentable when she heard the faint sound of bells chiming and looked up to see a novice curtsying before her. With a last pluck at her now mostly clean skirt, the Accepted rose. "I am," she said. She attempted to display a friendly smile as she introduced herself. Her grey eyes met the other woman's blue ones. "Accepted Amaranie Tice; you may call me Accepted Amaranie."

She paused then, looking around her as she considered where to begin. The Mistress of Novices' office made an easy meeting place, but if the novice was wise, she wouldn't find herself visiting it very often, and would have little need to find her way from here. Perhaps we should go back to the novice quarters and start from there, Amaranie observed to herself.

Directing her attention back to Vaska, she said, "You probably already know how to get here from the novice quarters, but I'd like to start showing you around from there. You'll most often be coming from your room to the main Tower, and I think it will make more sense that way." With a wave of her hand towards the door that would take them back towards the novice rooms, Amaranie began to walk, but kept her pace slow so that Vaska could easily catch up to her.

Novice Vaska
“Yes Accepted Amaranie,” Vaska replied. Her mood softened a bit, seeing Amaranie smile and look her in the eye. Some could be incredibly cold, as if they feared showing friendliness or a hint of warmth would be taken for fraternizing with the lower ranks. Even still others, Vaska had heard some novices whisper, seemed to revel in their superiority and demanded a level of deference equal to that of an Aes Sedai. She would give the level of respect that was due, as was honorable and proper, but not a shred more.

“Thank you, Accepted,” she replied after Amaranie decided to begin the tour from the novices’s quarters. While Vaska could have eventually learned the direction to everything from her rooms after learning it from the Mistress of Novices’ office, it would be much more efficient this way.

With Vaska’s height it only took a few strides to catch her up to Amaranie, placing herself so she was a few paces behind, yet still close enough to hear if she were to speak.

Accepted Amaranie
Amaranie led the way, picking up the pace slightly when she noticed that Vaska was easily able to keep up with her. Once they reached the door, the Accepted swung it open and held it for the novice before stepping out of the main Tower building and onto the short path that led towards the separate building where the channelers in training lived. She followed the path until she reached a set of signposts that had been placed about halfway between the smaller building and the Grey Tower itself.

She stopped there, waiting for Vaska, and once the novice had stopped, Amaranie spoke. "You can see the novice quarters from here," she said. "If you keep to the path between there and the Tower, you might have noticed the signs posted here. If you follow them, they can lead you to different places outside of the Tower. We'll come back here a little later, but I wanted to be sure you saw these before we begin."

After that, she turned around to return to the door they'd only just left. "If you stay on the path, you shouldn't have any trouble getting yourself to and from the Tower," the Accepted explained. She kept the two of them moving until they stood within the Grey Tower again.

"That door is the one you'll be entering most often when coming to the Tower from your room," Amaranie said. "You've already seen that it's not far from the Mistress of Novices' office. From here, we're going to start with the kitchens." Amaranie took them past the office where they'd met, turning left, then right down a couple of hallways, before following one that ended by a large set of double doors which were standing open.
She paused by the doors, looking at Vaska while she spoke. "Have you seen the kitchens yet? If you haven't, you'll find that they'll become familiar to you in very little time."

Novice Vaska
Vaska followed the Accepted down the hallway until they reached the large door. She was about to open the door for the Accepted, being her inferior, but Amaranie made a move to open it and furthermore held it open for the Novice, much to her surprise.
After passing through the door Vaska paused. As Amaranie spoke Vaska nodded and listened intently. "Yes Accepted," she replied, moving to follow as Amaranie turned back around. She carefully studied her surroundings as the pair moved through the hallways, wanting to ensure that she would not become lost in the future. The Light forbid.

When the two of them had passed the Mistress of Novices' office and reached the kitchen, Vaska was hit by the scent of food cooking and could hear the din of constant activity inside. "No Accepted, I have not yet seen the kitchens," she said honestly. As Amaranie had said, she knew she would be spending a large amount of time in here on chore duty. Hopefully, it would only be chore duty, and not for an inflicted punishment. Even in her short time here, she had heard that scrubbing pots was a favorite consequence to be imposed.

Accepted Amaranie
"Well, now you'll have your first chance to see them," Amaranie commented as she passed through the large doors. The dining area they entered was enormous, and the rows of tables and benches filled it. At this hour, with the cleanup from lunch done and the preparations for supper only beginning, the room didn't contain more than a bare handful of people. She led Vaska between the rows of tables and towards the kitchen itself. The Accepted looked inside, making sure there was enough room for herself and the novice, and after seeing that there was, they went in.

The scent that already hung in the air suggested to Amaranie that bread would be at least part of the supper menu that night. Throughout the kitchen, men and women mixed and kneaded. Still, since the learning ranks mostly had class at this hour, it wasn't too crowded. Amaranie looked at Vaska and said, "I don't want you to feel overwhelmed, so we're just going to walk through here and look around. You'll learn more the first day you're assigned to chores here." They passed by the sinks, the fireplaces, and the counter space where the servants were working, then the Accepted turned around to leave through the same door they'd used to come in.

Stopping in the dining room, Amaranie told Vaska, "If you have questions, about the kitchens, or something else, please feel free to ask. If not, we'll continue to the laundry room."

Novice Vaska
Vaska followed Amaranie through the doors in front of them into a large dining room, filled with enough benches to seat half a village. She could imagine the room filled to capacity at meal times, yet now with the afternoon hour it was only staffed with a skeleton crew of servants, all wearing the Tower's livery.

After the two of them were done surveying the dining room, she stepped after the Accepted into the bustling kitchen, the smell of yeasty bread filling the hot space. She knew she would be soon spending a great deal of her time here on assigned chores. Now, however, the smells and sounds of food cooking reminded her briefly of home, to the keep in Northern Arafel where she spent her childhood years. The kitchen was similar to this, always busy. There was always food to prepare, whether for her father's family, his guests, or for the numerous servants and other workers in his house's employ.

Shaking her head after being addressed, Vaska replied, "No I have no further question. Please continue."

Accepted Amaranie
They left the kitchens, and within a couple of turns, arrived at the Tower's main staircase. "The laundry room is downstairs," Amaranie explained as she stepped onto the stairs to follow them down. "These levels are also where most of the storerooms are, as well as the Vaults where the Indigos keep all the objects of Power that the Tower has." They passed three doors, then Amaranie left the stairs and opened the door for Vaska. It led into a small, slightly dark hallway with walls and floors of grey stone. While it was clean, it was not quite as presentable as the more public areas of the Tower upstairs.

Amaranie walked through it without taking any notice of the difference. Her work in the nearby Vaults kept her down here much of the day, making her very familiar with these halls. Turning to the novice, she said, "If you just turn right and count five doors down, you'll reach the laundry room. Usually, you'll hear water splashing once you're close." That wasn't so today, but after passing four doors, the Accepted opened the fifth and looked in.

The room was large, dominated by enormous barrels of water and tables and drying racks lining the sides of it. Here and there, a servant sat by one of the barrels, scrubbing clothing, but as with the kitchen, it wasn't very crowded. Amaranie let Vaska look in, commenting, "This is another common chore for novices. If you haven't done laundry before, you'll learn how once you're assigned here."

When they were done there, Amaranie took them back towards the staircase. "We'll be going back upstairs now," she told the novice. "I'm afraid it will be quite the climb to reach the upper levels from here, but you'll get used to it." To herself, Amaranie thought that perhaps she should have planned differently, but there was no help for it now. The classrooms, her next intended stop, were a few flights up from the kitchens, and couldn't be left out of this tour. She gave Vaska a small smile and did the best she could to go slower than she would normally, so that she wouldn't tire the new novice on one of her first days here.

Novice Vaska

The novice trailed behind Amaranie, down the stairs and into the dark hallways. She barely noticed the change, however as she shuddered when Amaranie mentioned the Indigo ajah's vaults. She knew little of objects that used the One Power--ter'angreal, she recalled from her lessons[/i]--and all her life they were taught as something to be feared. Even though she was in the tower, she still did not fully trust these mystical objects.

Her thoughts returned to the present, and more pleasant things as the accepted addressed her. "Five doors down, of course," she muttered quietly, more to herself than anyone else. As the pair stopped at the fifth door, Vaska poked her head in to peer inside. As with the kitchens, the enormous room reminded her of the laundry at her family's keep. Unlike with the kitchens, however, she had rarely stopped to watch the maids do the washing and mending.

Following Amaranie up the staircase, she had to make a conscious effort to hold her skirts up and not race up two steps at a time. Responding to her guide, she said, "Of course, accepted. The stairs are no bother." It was true, the stairs did not phase her in the slightest. Vaska had spent years as part of the border defense of Arafel, where she climbed up and down many steps of the high stone towers.
